Collins Street Extension

Client: Thiess Pty Ltd
Type: Urban Design
Date: 2004

Initially Urban Initiatives was involved in the design construct tender process for this development, advising Peter Elliott Pty. Ltd. on landscape and urban design matters.

Subsequently UI was part of the winning tender of Thiess and provided landscape architecture and urban design services to the contractors for this project to construct an extension of Collins Street into Docklands.

The design involved creating a tree-lined extension of Collins Street as an elevated structure over Spencer Street Station and back down to Docklands Esplanade (Old Footscray Road), as well as a small public square on the South West corner of Spencer and Collins Streets.

Now completed, the Collins Street Extension acts as one of the major links between the city and Docklands. The square, located in a part of the city where public space is scarce, provides a much needed space that is being well utilized by the public. The square will grow in importance as population density in the area increases.
